Introduction

uPVC or unplasticized polyvinyl chloride is on of the most widely used thermoplastic materials, due to its flexibility of usage and competitive price. It is manufactured by the petrochemical industry who produce dichloride from ethane and chloride and apply pyrolisis above 400c to cause splitting into vinyl chloride and hydrochloric acid.


The basic polymer is mixed with additives such as colour, filler, lubricants and stabilizers in accordance with recipe determined by the properties of finishded products. The mix of compound is transported to either extruders or injection molding machines to be converted into the end product


uPVC pipes and fittings will not deteriorate under attack from bacteria or other micro organism and will not provide food source to micro/macro organism and fungi. These pipes and fittings are also suitable for chemical industries as they have chemical resistance to most acids and alkalies. uPVC, being themoplastic materials are prone to variance in physical properties based to variation in temparature. It is important to take into account the application of end use and temperature conditions when selecting class and rates of pipes (Wall Thickness of Pipe)

Sailent Features of uPVC Pipes


  1. Non-Corrosive: uPVC pipes are not attacked by acids, alkalis, oil and salts etc., because uPVC material is chemically inert.
  2. Insulator: uPVC is an excellent insulator and is used as an insulation on electrical wires & cables and as ducts for electrical and communication cables
  3. Mechanical Strength: uPVC pipes will not dent or flatten under pressure because of high tnesile & impact strength
  4. Low Thermal Conductivity: uPVC has low co-efficient of thermal conductivity & because of this there is no heat loss or gained
  5. Fire Proof: uPVC pipes will not support combustion and in the event of fire, flames are unable to spread along.
  6. Flow Efficiency: uPVC pipes have smooth & glossy surface which discourage the formation of scale and deposits.
  7. Light Weight: uPVC pipes are of less weight compared to cast iron, asbestos & cement pipes. This reduces manapower & installation operation cost
  8. Sanitary: uPVC pipes are completely non-toxic & does not affect the taste, smell or colour of the liquid nor reacts with any liquid to cause a precipitant
